This year is the 410th anniversary of one of the most famous plots in British history, The Gunpowder Plot. A plot by a group of radical Catholic conspirators led by Robert Catesby to kill King James I of England, a Protestant. The plot involved blowing him up in the Houses of Parliament with all his ministers. On November 5th 1605 the King's chief minister, Robert Cecil, said "It has pleased God to uncover a plot to kill the King, Queen, Prince and the most important men of this land, by secretly putting gunpowder into a cellar under Parliament and blowing them all up at once."
The most famous member of the Gunpowder conspirators was Guy Fawkes (or Guido as he was christened), because he was the one who was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament. Even though Fawkes was fighting as a soldier for the Spanish army when the plot was first d
